It is great to be home and have Shaun back home too. We both got back on Saturday night, and then Sunday we were able to spend some time together after Shaun got back from church stuff in the morning. For Father’s Day we went out to dinner to Carabba’s, a new Italian place around here. We came back home, put Nat to bed, and then watched the movie “Stranger Than Fiction”. It was good…a lot more serious then I thought it would be, with it being Will Ferrell and all!

Monday I worked and Shaun came home early cause he was sick. And he is STILL home sick! Poor guy…yesterday he went to the doctor and found out he has some sort of respitory infection. So he’s on antibiotics and was given a perscription for some cough medicine that completely knocks him out. So for the last 2 days he’s pretty much slept. So he’s home…but he’s not.

Yesterday I made my very first batch of “Obstsuppe”…otherwise known as cold fruit soup. I was so very proud of myself…I think this is the first Mennonite food I have ever made! It turned out well. The reason I was motivated to make it was because my Mom had given us some while we were up there and Natalie LOVED it, so I decided to try it myself. She seems to love mine too, which is a good thing!

  1. Is that the same idea as Pluma Moose? (I know this is not the correct spelling!)

  2. Yes, Sheila, that is what Bob calls it when I make it. Probably some differences, but generally the same.

  3. Ok, when you come here we are eating Mennonite! Watermelon & rollkuchen, obstsuppe & cream of wheat, buns/jam/cheese, riebelplatz, farmer sausage … DELICIOUS! Good going on making this tastey treat! We gotta raise our kids at least Half-Menno!

  4. Okay, I have/had no idea what Mennonite is. I assumed by how I’ve read it used in yours and other blogs that it was like a heritage. So I looked it up on google and it says it is a religious denomination. So, I consider myself a Baptist, but am not familiar with foods that are known as ‘Baptist dishes.’ So, am I way off here?

  5. Zandra, I sure can’t blame you for being confused! Mennonites were followers of Menno Simmons, who broke away form the Catholic Church (along with Luther) and ended up being persecuted for their faith because they introduced the practice of ADULT baptism, which inconvenienced the government in keeping track of their population. Because of the hard time they were given, many of these European people moved to Prussia and Russia, but because of their ethincity, their food was also called Mennonite (which, as it turns out now, has a lot of Russian influence. A combination of Dutch and Russian, I guess. Many Mennonites (including Kristal’s great-grandparents) fled Russia in the 1920′s and 30′s to N.A. and S.A. There are quite a few in Abbostford, Kristal’s hometown, and so Mennonite food is well known here. There are also quite a few Mennonite Churches (because it is an established denomination) but being Mennonite by heritage is definetely not a prerequisite. AND being Mennonite (by name or heritage) does not necessarily make you religious. I hope that helps. Kristal’s Mom

  6. Yes, that does help…thanks Kristal’s Mom!

Quality Time...

Yesterday was a great day!

In the morning my mom and I headed to the House of James warehouse sale. There we met my Aunt Monika and Larissa. Larissa and I were able to catch up and have some tasty coffee while Grammy and Aunt Monika shopped. It was fun although Natalie was extremely fussy since she’s getting two of her top molars in!

After Natalie’s nap my Mom, Natalie, & I headed out to Langley to my favorite store, Jacob Connexion. I really wasn’t planning on buying much but I found a bunch of things that fit me great and were perfect for the summer in Phoenix. I got 3 pairs of capris (tan, green, and jean) and 4 shirts…woohoo! So exciting!

Last night I was able to go out on a FABULOUS dinner date with my sister cousins…Carolyn, Bonnie, and Adrienne. Oh, and Jonah (Carolyn’s 4 month old baby) was along too. He is just TOO precious! He weighs almost as much as Nat and he’s less than a third her age. What a cute chunker!

We ate a tasty dinner at my favorite restaraunt in Abbotsford, Greek Islands.

After dinner we walked to Bonnie’s place and had coffee and dessert. It was such a special night. Now, if only Julene had been there too!

  5. Natalie is such a beautiful child! Thanks for the new pictures. Hope your trip is fun. How exciting about Indonesia too!!! That’s awesome!

SERIOUSLY time for an update!

No, I have not forgotten about my blog, I promise. Things have just been crazy, as usual. I guess I always say that…but it’s true!

Where am I now, you may ask? I am sitting at the computer at my parent’s house in Abbotsford! Yup…last minute trip up here to expedite the renewal of my Canadian passport. Shaun is at Junior High Camp all week in Malibu, California (bummer, yeah right!) so we decided this would be perfect timing for me to come up and get this taken care of. The reason I need my passport so quickly???…

…I AM GOING TO INDONESIA IN AUGUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you tell I am excited?

My mom, Kari (my sister-in-law), Natalie, and I are all going together for two weeks. It is still sureal that everything is coming together. We decided that now is the time to go since we don’t know what the future holds for us with kids, etc, and it’s easiest to travel with one child and Natalie’s at a pretty good age to do that. Also, I am QUITTING my job right before we leave (WOOHOO!) since I plan on teaching piano in the fall instead. I am absolutely ecstatic about this since I will have so much more time on my hands and will actually get to spend time with Shaun. I have some students lined up already and I am trusting the Lord will provide more…so you can pray about that.

What else has been new…hmm…we were sick. Yuck. I had a stomach bug/flu a couple weeks back and then last week Natalie got it. She had it really bad, poor thing! I think she lost a couple pounds. She was so skinny (as if she’s not tiny enough already!) and she had a HORRIBLE diaper rash from all the butt-pee (a nice way of saying that). And she threw up…gross. Poor girl. We were just thankful that Shaun didn’t get sick too since he has been so busy with work and planning for camp.

House stuff is good…we’ve been busy painting when we have time. We painted the entire downstairs with the exception of the entrance area. It’s all a olivey sageish green color. It looks awesome. And then the downstairs half bath we painted a really really dark almost hunter green. Very dramatic. And then we painted our bedroom too…it’s a brown color with a hint of green…sounds gross but is my favorite color in the house. So it’s coming together. We are also hoping to get our yard done sometime soon.

Anyways…I am here in Abbotsford now until Saturday morning. I am freezing cold…seriously. I don’t remember it being this cold here in June. But then again my body has acclimated to some serious heat. Who knows.

I haven’t taken any exciting pictures lately but I will try to post some from our week here soon.

Have a great day!

  1. Hi Kristal! It is so good to finally hear from you again. Guess getting away from it all finally gives you some free time. I hope that you have a wonderful time in Abbotsford and can return to Arizona refreshed. I have been waiting and waiting for you to post and all I have seen for days is “lameness”. Exactly. But today it was so nice to hear from you again. Looking forward to seeing pictures of this week. I STILL CANNOT BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE COMING HERE IN AUGUST!!!! I am thrilled beyond belief! Shivers and tears, I tell you. Well, sister dear … soon we will be together again. I love you.

  2. Wow – you have come to the valley in a cold spell! i hope it gets nice for you while you’re here! that’s so great that you get to go to Indonesia – and what a perfect time for it :)
I’m sure you’re trying to fill your time here with family, but if you’re interested in walking around the lake at all, just let me know :)

  3. how wonderful!! And yes, travel with one child (still small enough to ride on your lap for free?) is way easier than travelling with more.

I’m so excited for you in all aspects. Travel and teaching piano! … and the future that might bring more kids ;) They get older and that sibling itch starts itching.
